I'm probably one of the few living human beings in America who's never seen reality TV. Not "Survivors", not "The Bachelor/Bachelorette" series-nada. But the reality is-I am a junkie when it comes to the real thing.
I'm talking Richard Clark facing the 9/11 Commission investigation. And as I write this, Condoleezza Rice will appear before the same questioners later this morning. I've got plenty of writing I should do. I'll turn her testimony on in the background, knowing full well I'll get sucked in at some point. Oh, and I was an O.J. Simpson trial junkie, too.
Genuine reality TV of this kind is bigger than life-just like the movies. Articulate people address weighty issues in a public forum. As dramatists, we can all learn something from these national video spectacles. Who knows-they might sharpen the focus of that next courtroom scene you write.
By the time you read this, we'll know what Rice told the commission. And yes, I guess I do like reality TV after all.
