CONTESTS -- WHO IS REALLY READING OUR SCRIPTS????
I recently entered a screenwriting contest. Yup, sent in my cash and 2 copies, release, application etc. and waited patiently while some unknown and apparently unaccountable person decided what fate would befall my wit and wisdom. I later found out that the people assigned to read all scripts entered were in fact festival volunteers. That's right folks. Aspiring screenwriters like you and me. Not Agents, Producers, or Studio Heads. Just the average movie goer who happens to have some free time and likes to be around film lovers and film makers, so they volunteer to help make the festival happen. At first I was TICKED OFF!! I mean why weren't the A-list names on the film fest panel reading our wonderous scripts?? Then it hit me--like a thud--because they don't pay for the tickets. I know from past events that these exulted ones do read the top 10 or the top 3 winning scripts - (my script placed in the top 10% which translates to the top 35) and that's how it should be done. The readers weed out the also rans. I will try harder next year and remember to suck up to the volunteers....Just kidding. |
