REJECTION - WHEN NO DOESN'T REALLY MEAN NO
Rejections can be turned around, but you must be prepared. Case in point: I sent a story that I absolutely love to a telefilm Producer. Unfortunately, he didn't think he could sell it in today's market. So I asked him what he thought he could sell? He gave me a brief sketch of what's hot right now. I happened to have a spec that fit his idea of a marketable concept. He got excited (always a good sign) and said, "Send it right away." I rushed to FedEx and placed my script in fate's hands. He is currently reading it. If my story meets his needs he intends to take it to the TV STAR he is attached to on his next project. Remember the benefits of aggressively pursuing every opportunity. Even if this story doesn't get off the ground I made an important contact and he seems to be responsive to my writing. Instead of being defeated by his rejection of my first spec, I just pitched another story. Also, if I have a story idea in the future I know I can call him and get another chance. The timid and tempermental don't get calls answered. The professional, flexible and personable do. Always be ready to change gears and always be in drive. |
