My POV Brian A. Wilson
"I DON'T LIVE IN L.A. NOW WHAT?" Part 2
So you're lamenting the fact that you live in Tacoma or Tangiers or some other place far distant, geographically, from Tinseltown.
Yes, if you want to be on the staff of a sit-com, this is an issue.
If you're working on a spec TV script, or a spec feature, or spec MOW, it's only as much of a problem as you make it in your mind.
Why? Because technology is your friend, that's why.
Last week, I mentioned the value of your computer. Let me harp on that again. As is the case everywhere else, knowledge is power in Hollywood. So get educated. Keep up.
Find it a little tough to swallow $200 a year for the print version of Daily Variety? Me too. That's why I subscribe to Variety Online. Same info, but it's even better because it's searchable. Cost: $3 a day, $13 a month or a measly $59 a year. Even if you work at McDonald's, it's only a day and a half's wages. And if you live outside LA, the electro version gets you the info much sooner than the mail version, especially important if you're replying to ads.
If you don't know about it, IMDB.com is a rich resource. That's Internet Movie Data Base. It's an online compendium of who did what when in what movie. Hugely helpful to find out if that option offer you considering comes from a legit producer with credits.
Lastly for this week, if you're editing on your Mac (and you are shooting your own shorts, riiiiiight? Good.), and you use Final Cut Pro, you simply must check out lafcpug.org. That's the LA Final Cut Pro User's Group. Last week's guest speaker was Randy Ubillios, the guy who wrote FCP. That gives you an indication of the level of this group. Their web site packs in more information per square inch than you can imagine. If you use FCP, you've got to keep up with lafcpug.org. Tips, tricks, meeting minutes, troubleshooting, ask a pro and much more.
Hey, why doesn't somebody do that with screenwriting?
Next week: Third and final part. Beyond the Computer: Connecting to Hollywood from afar.
Keep writing. BW LA
